From Trash Can to Tournament

So, you’ve downloaded your Trashketball Madness Brackets, you’ve got your review game ready to project, and your students are buzzing with excitement. Now comes the fun part: Building the Arena.

One of the reasons I love Trashketball is its versatility. You can run a world-class tournament with a $0 budget and a recycling bin, or you can “level up” with a few classroom-safe props that make the experience feel like the NBA Finals.

Here is my breakdown of how to style your court, depending on your budget!

Choose Your Court Style

1. The DIY “Scrapper” Setup
Estimated Cost: $0 If you’re diving into a spontaneous review session, you probably already have everything you need in your room right now.
• The Hoop: A standard classroom trash can (give it a quick wipe-down!) or a large cardboard box.
• The Ball: Balled-up scrap paper from the recycling bin. Pro-Tip: Wrap the paper in one layer of clear packing tape to give it a little more “flight” and weight.
• The Lines: Use your floor tiles as markers (e.g., “The 3-point line is five tiles back from the bin”).

2. The “Pro Commissioner” Setup
Estimated Cost: $15–$50 If you plan to make Trashketball a staple in your classroom (or you’re running a month-long “Madness” bracket), these small investments make a huge difference in the “official” feel and—more importantly—the noise level!
• The Hoop: While a trash can works, I love using a Clip-on Basketball Hoop that attaches right to the rim of the bin. It’s a total scroll-stopper and makes “trashkets” feel much more real. Get a hoop trash can here.
• The Ball: To keep your sanity (and your windows) safe, I highly recommend Soft Foam Basketballs. They are silent when they hit the floor, they don’t bounce wildly into your centered-interest wall, and they feel much more “official” than paper.
• The Lines: I use Brightly Colored Painter’s Tape to mark the floor. It’s easy to peel up at the end of the day without leaving a sticky residue, and it clearly defines the 1, 2, and 3-point zones.

💡 Pro-Tip for the Guide:

I always recommend the Pro Setup if you plan to run “Trashketball Madness” every year. The foam balls alone reduce classroom “thud” noise by about 80%, which your neighboring teachers will thank you for!

Setting Up the "Game Day" Atmosphere

The more you “buy-in” to the theme, the more the students will, too! If you want to go all out, here are a few extra touches I’ve found that really amp up the energy:
• A Coach’s Whistle: Wear it around your neck to grab attention between rounds.
• Themed Stickers: Great for “Player of the Game” rewards or for students to decorate their brackets.
• The “Jumbotron”: Don’t forget to have your Trashketball PowerPoint projected and ready to go!

The Visual Arena: Tournament Bulletin Boards

If you want to truly amplify the “Madness,” turn your bracket into a life-sized bulletin board! Beyond individual handouts, a large-scale visual allows students to track progress in real-time.

  • DIY Brackets: Use painter’s tape to “draw” bracket lines on a wall or use a massive roll of butcher paper.
  • Interactive Progress: Have a student “representative” move the winning grammar concept forward. It’s a low-cost way to build incredible classroom community!
